4th Grade ELA

Course Description

Welcome to 4th Grade Language Arts for Term 3! This term is focused highly on Independent Projects (IP). We begin in March with IP topic approvals - all animals - and reading a literature book tied to their IP topic. Then we use all of April to learn how to write a research paper - selecting reliable resources, how to take and organize notes, how to write an outline, writing thesis statements, editing and revising a large work, writing a bibliography, and publishing. Once the research paper is done, language arts diversifies a bit with a move to writing and literature alternating days, usually vocabulary and grammar on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays for writing, and Wednesdays and Fridays for literature.         Besides writing the research paper, the class literature novel will be Sheep by Valerie Hobbs. We will use the book's perspective being told from the main character's point of view to write their IP creative writing piece, and this time the main character is a DOG!  The IP literature project will be based on the literature book they read independently in March. Vocabulary continues to use the Vocabulary from Classical Roots workbook, as well as discussing vocabulary related to their literature book and animal. We look forward to the work that will be displayed on IP NIght on June 11th!
