Students will explore and evaluate a variety of texts and ideas from multiple sources and points of view. We will be learning to compose arguments with civility and respect as we establish credibility and logical reasoning in both our written and oral debates. It is imperative to learn to justify our opinions with logical and sufficient evidence in order to establish a community of trust, where civil discourse leads to idea generation and progress. In our examination of varied fictional and informational content, students will analyze the stories and interactions of others to create a stronger understanding of themselves, each other, and the world around us, ultimately sparking compassion and responsibility through convicted, reasonable, and well articulated opinions. This term will be focusing specifically on determining a central idea and analyzing an author’s point of view through our shared novel reading of The Only Road by Alexander Diaz. Reading responses and literature circles will help to improve students’ comprehension.. This beautiful story will also help support students’ understanding of compassion and immigration
